Disguising himself as a monk, Duke
Vincentio of Vienna puts his strict deputy Angelo in charge
to enforce the city’s laws that curtail sexual license,
and goes undercover to watch the results—and so becomes
both witness and participant in a chain of events revealing
that even the upright Angelo risks corruption when sexual
desire clouds his judgment. Young Claudio is condemned to
death for impregnating his fiancée, and Angelo stands
fast by the sentence until he encounters Claudio’s
sister Isabella, a novice at the convent who comes to plead
for mercy. Overcome by desire, Angelo demands a high cost
from Isabella—her chastity in exchange for her brother’s
life. Meanwhile, the comic fops and bawds from the brothel
crowd are having their own problems with the new regime.
Duke Vincentio must react quickly and surreptitiously to
avoid a perversion of justice and restore balance to his
conflicted city.
