ASP collaboration with Liz Linder Photography

Posted: Oct 15, 2011

How to make a portrait without showing a face?

Actor’s Shakespeare Project wanted visibility around a special residency which involved a little intrigue and a larger challenge:  To depict individual expression in a series of iconic images. To have these images depict individual expression, creating a series of photographs that represent whole communities. The communities are incarcerated youth, youth from Boston schools, seniors from Cambridge, and ASP teaching artists. The expression is inspired by the words of Shakespeare.

We had limited time and short access to facilities and teens.  We had to think smart, and we had to shoot fast.   And, we had to be fun.

We and the folks at ASP set up some rules of the game:  Solid, stark backdrops.  Single words with dimension.  Simple props.  We fell in love with the process, the images, and the stories surrounding them.

Thanks to the youth, the instructors, the students and the seniors and the amazing team at Liz Linder Photography who made these images rock.  A special thanks to ASP and Lori Taylor who first approached us about this collaboration.

Actors' Shakespeare Project's collaboration with Liz Linder Photography, Portraits without Faces, will be on display at the Moakley Courthouse in Boston from January 15, 2012 - March 16, 2012 from 9:00am to 5:30pm, Monday - Friday.
